An Illustrator, first of novels, then of his own children's books, which he also wrote. He also wrote screenplays, and wrote and made the puppets for a puppet show. He is another case of a successful children's book author that has very little conscern for children (like Roald Dahl?) Some children books illustrators write more for the residual child in themselves, I think, than for the audience of children who pick up their work.
A very dark, but somewhat playful world is unveiled in these pieces. His figures have a distinct and unique stylization, and his black and white (and grey) contrasts are compositionally lovely.

I absolutely love Edward Gorey. He's the reason I became an illustrator.
